I don’t use this blog anymore but people keep starting to follow it. I blog here now. But this is pickled asparagus that I made with my pal Louise the other day- mine’s on the left, her’s on the right.

Cale and I were cafe hopping a bit today because it’s his day off and I don’t have school this week. I saw a recipe for brussels sprouts fettuccine in a some gourmet foodie mag and decided I wanted to make my own version of it for our dinner. IT WAS SO GOOD. I drastically altered the recipe as in the magazine- it’s originally very simple and I added a whole bunch of things. I basically sauteed garlic, red onion, chilli, brussels sprouts, with some borlotti beans and leftover chickpeas, added toasted pine nuts and walnuts, plus the obvious salt. When the pasta was cooked and drained, I put it back into the pot, added the mixture and tossed it all through with heapsa parmesan- could totally use nutritional yeast or soy cheese if you’ve got a good one. I added peas and crumbled some goats cheese into mine ‘cos Cale didn’t want any. He said it was “pretty good” but “maybe too hippy” and I thought it was amazing.

fleshondeadbone asked: Do you go dumpster diving in Melbourne ?!

Yep. Heaps more when I lived north, twice weekly when I lived north, but now that I’m west and all the bins around here are locked/behind fences/compressed/inside and life sucks a little bit more. We visit inner city bins for bread and bagels and I’m always checking Coles to see if the bins are accessible- used to be so good but now they’re locked all the time. Do you?

Tonight I made the Better-Dreaming Parsnip Soup from Lena’s beautiful zine ‘Quick Thoughts, Slow Breath’. I’m so shit at following recipes, I forget to check what to do and always add in or omit ingredients- so this has garlic and pecan paste in it too. Molly and I were dipping the lemony white string beans that I also made into it and they were a great combination.
Today I learned to stretch and prime canvas at school then got coffee with my pal Matt- we talked about how we both miss America/Americans, rad talk that sucks, and how we wanna start a band together. I’m feeling really excited and content, post-pre-menstrual times rule.

My new blog- dunno whether I will keep using this one because I just posted food to THAT one and not my FOOD one?!

Broccoli and walnut soup (drizzled with olive oil)

Broccoli and walnut soup (drizzled with olive oil)

I’m at my folks house in the country this weekend. This Sunday morning we went to two local markets.

The Yarra Glen farmers market at Yerring station was too bougie and lacked the no frills aspect I like in other farmers markets- fancy packaging and steep prices. I convinced my mother to buy me some white beans and radishes and we went halves in a whole pumpkin and bag of parsnip. We also got a loaf of organic spiced vinefruit sourdough which has rad ingredients like polenta and apple juice. I can’t usually afford organic produce :)

We noticed a sign for the Healsville market so took a detour to check it out. Very few stalls but worth the trip soley for the old Italian man who cures his own olives and sells them in old jars and plastic containers. I got a container for 3 bucks. So good. I intended to cure olives this year but the tree in my backyard never flourished and the trees in my neighbourhood didn’t really grow enough. I can’t wait to try it oneday. That market also housed ‘The Nut Lady’ who sells nuts, seeds and dried fruit.

When we got back to their place, Mum showed me all the vegetables she’s growing and let me take home some artichoke, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. I also picked a bag of lemons for warm lemon and ginger drink.

We cooked up some stuff from the garden mixed with things we’d bought at the market for brunch- I made mushrooms with pecans.

Wonton noodle soup w/ tofu and shitake @ Bo De Trai- a vegan, Buddhist, volunteer-run eatery in Footscray. It’s just down the road from my house, a 2 min bike ride away, yet this was my first visit since moving in 6 months ago?!
